Mueller-Lyer Illusion

In the Mueller-Lyer Illusion, the two red lines are equal in length.

However, the line on the left looks longer than the line on the right and the line on the right looks shorter than the line on the left.

Both of these descriptions are correct since 80% of the illusion is due to the line and arrowheads on the left and 20% of the illusion is due to the line and arrowheads on the right.

Here you can see that the two red lines are equal in length. The arrowheads on the ends of the lines somehow cause you to perceive the lines as being unequal.

In the figure above, take a ruler or a piece of paper and measure the two lines for yourself.

Poggendorf Illusion

In the Poggendorf Illusion, the slanted black line does not appear to be a single line that is connected behind the red bar.

The slanted black line on the right side of the red bar appears too low to be connected to the slanted black line on the left.

By placing another black line on top of the red bar, it is now evident that the black line behind the bar is connected.

In the figure above, lay a ruler or piece of paper along the black line and see for yourself that the two halves are connected.

Research on the Blindspot

To view this example, close your right eye and using your left eye, look directly at the white box on the right side of the picture. The blue circle in the middle should fall on your blindspot when your face is about 5 to 12 inches away from the screen (depending upon the screen resolution). When you are at the correct distance, the large blue circle in the middle of the figure will disappear and the spokes of the wheel pattern will converge in the center.

In this example, the green and red lines provide the brain with competing information. The question is which line will the brain choose to fill in. Follow the instructions for the above example to see how your brain handles this task.

This example provides a little tougher challenge for the brain. Both the horizontal and vertical lines are offset and "filling in" one or both would require a realignment of the lines. In this example, when the blue circle falls on the blindspot only the vertical line is "filled in" and realigned.

 Horizontal - Vertical Illusion

With the Horizontal - Vertical Illusion, the horizontal line and the vertical line in this figure are equal in length but they do not appear to be equal. Either the vertical line appears longer or the horizontal line appears shorter.

This figure is the same as above except that the lines have been separated and rulers placed beside them. You can see that the two lines are in fact the same length.

In the figure above, take a ruler or a piece of paper and measure the two lines for yourself. They are the same length even though they appear unequal.

While we do not know what causes this illusion, we do know that an important component is the bisection of the horizontal line by the vertical line.

In this figure, almost all of the illusion has disappeared. The vertical line still looks just a tiny bit longer than the horizontal line but removing the bisection of the horizontal has virtually eliminated the illusion.

If bisection of the horizontal line is so critical, one might expect a similar experience if the vertical line is bisected. This is not the case.

Here again, the two lines appear to be essentially the same length.

Ponzo Illusion

The Ponzo Illusion occurs when you have two horizontal lines inside two slanted lines like an inverted V. The two horizontal lines are equal in length but they do not appear to be equal.

Take a small ruler or use a piece of paper and measure the lines for yourself.

Here, the two horizontal lines have been moved close together so that you can see that they are in fact equal in length.
